intro

Hi and welcome! This is Black Saliva, a style focused blog written by Viivi Vanessa R.

I'm a 24 year old girl from Helsinki, Finland and this blog is my own little space on the internet where I can share my thoughts, outfits and write a bit about my life and stuff that I do.

For first timers, I'd say take a quick look at ABOUT ME and get to know me a little before browsing through my posts.

Anyway, I hope you like my blog and leave me a comment.

Enjoy your stay!

it's been a while

Hi guys! It's been half a year since I last updated my blog. Let me tell you a bit about why I went on an unplanned hiatus in the first place.

Remember when I last re-opened my blog and stated I strictly wanted to post about style only? Well, seems like that was where I was wrong. Cutting out many possible post choices only made it harder for me to blog. I felt like nothing I wanted to post about, was good enough for this blog. I raised the bar too high for myself. I took outfit photos but never posted them because I felt like there wasn't enough pictures or they weren't diverse or good enough. And that led to me not wanting to blog at all.

But I thought that all would be fixed after I got to Japan, because that would be interesting enough to blog about, right? But it turns out when I got there, I realized I wanted to enjoy the trip and live in the moment, not stop in the middle of something and take outfit pics in the deadly heat of japanese summer. Everybody who has ever blogged, knows it's a lot of work to deliver something as simple as an outfit post.

Also I didn't wanna bother my friends to do the photographing for me, because if they don't blog themselves, I have no way to return the favor. It would just be annoying to them. And taking good outfit pics by yourself is... well, hard.

Another problem I've had for a longer time already, is that my current camera is way too big and heavy to be carried along with me to places and many times that I've actually had it with me, I haven't even took it out of my bag to take the pictures I wanted, because it was "too much work". Taking pics with my phone is much easier and faster, but I used to think that the quality of them wasn't good enough for blogging (which is funny because if you look at the pictures in my posts, the quality still isn't the best because I just aren't that good with cameras haha).

Anyway, I've been thinking about getting a smaller camera soon, so it should fix that problem.

After Japan, I totally lost my inspiration for this blog and thought about closing it for good many times. I had too much stuff I should blog about, but I didn't, because I didn't know where to start and didn't have any will to do it.

But for some reason I just couldn't bring myself to do it. This blog means too much to me and it's been a big part of me for the past almost seven years. I didn't want to end something I would regret later. And I'm glad I didn't, because I recently got my motivation back! I finally realized what my readers and friends have been telling me all along: "I liked your blog better before". Reading my old posts, I understood that was true and it's okay to post about normal life and not everything needs to be super duper amazing. Even though I had people constantly telling me that, I guess sometimes you just need to figure it out by yourself. Especially when you're the kind of person like I am who always thinks they're right lol.

Trying way too hard to be perfect, took all the fun away from blogging. Also trying to keep the posting schedule too tight made me super stressed, so in the future I'll try to not think about it too much. I don't want to make any promises I can't keep.

That said, the future posts might be about anything, but if something is for sure, I will keep posting about my nails (because that's a thing I feel super passionate about, but the things I want to say about them would be too long to post on instagram) and I have a whole series about my Japan trip planned (so you will still get to know what I did during my trip yay!), even if they're mostly pics I took with my phone. I won't force myself to take outfit pics if I don't feel like taking any, but if I do feel like it, I'll keep those posts coming as well.

The blog also has a new layout! The new start after hiatus wouldn't feel as fresh without one, haha. There's no dramatic changes to it, because why change something that works fine and is what I like, hmm. The pics are once again taken by my super talented friend, Heikki! Please go give him a follow if you like the photos.

You probably noticed, but the header is a bit different than usually. How do you like the slideshow? Which one of the headers is your favourite? I've tried to have the header as a slideshow before too, but even when I got it to work on my computer, it didn't work on tablet. Now it should, but please let me know if you have any problems viewing it!

But now, I'm excited about getting back to blogging! I feel a bit rusty, but I'm sure it will get better soon. I haven't really read any blogs for a while, so I have a lot of catching up to do with the blog world.

Has anyone missed me during my break? ;)

Drooling Over Your Polish

GUYS. I HAVE SOME VERY EXCITING NEWS FOR YOU ALL. You might know about this already if you've been following me on other social media platforms, such as Instagram and Twitter, but now.. it's time to make it official!

You probably know that I'm absolutely crazy about almost everything nail-related, and if you don't... well you know now and you can only imagine how friggin' excited I am about this!! One of my long-term dreams has been to get to design my own nail polish and... IT FINALLY CAME TRUE!!

idkuva
I wanted the name of the polish to be somewhat related to my blog's title and 'white saliva' or 'gold saliva' would've been super lame so I came up with this instead! It's kinda funny and cute, ain't it? :-D

I was at work one day and Satu started talking about a custom nail polish collection we might have a change to do with this great indie polish brand - Dollish Polish, and I immediately agreed it would be a great idea. SO, we started thinking about it right away and decided we would ask some of our bloggers to collaborate with us and have them each create their own dream polish.

And well, I might be working for CesarsShop and I might not exactly fit into the beauty/nail blogger category, but I am a blogger as well and nails are a big part of me and this blog. SO I BUTTED MY WAY IN, haha. The other fabulous bloggers we asked to join the project are Charming Nails, Saara Sarvas, Polishaholic, Better Nail Day, Wasting Lifestyle and Sonnela.

L to R: Charming Nails, me, Saara Sarvas, Polishaholic, Better Nail Day & Wasting Lifestyle and Sonnela.

So. If you were given the task to design any kind of polish, what would yours be like? Well, for sure you don't want something that you know already exists, right? After that you'll probably start thinking what kind of formulas you prefer. I mostly like cremes and glitters and that's pretty much it. A creme polish would've been boring to do, so it was easy to decide I would go with glitter!

The next thing I asked myself was; what kind of glitter? And in what colors? I had two ideas. I could mix all kinds of pretty colors together, or I could go with a more simple version and pick two colors. I decided to go with the two-color version and picked my favorite colors for it. WHITE and GOLD.

This was the first picture I saw after giving Dolly my ideas for the polish. It was perfect right away!

I wanted the polish to have a clear base so it could be used as a glitter topper or on it's own. I first was thinking about picking one of the colors as the "main color", but ended up going 50% and 50% in the end. The nail polish has white hexagon glitter in 4 different sizes and gold hexagon glitter in 3 different sizes and the final product is so goddamn pretty and sparkly and exactly how I imagined it would be!

We finally recieved these polishes at Cesars last week and I decided to do my nails with it right away. I continued with the white x gold theme and this is how they turned out! The other polishes I used, were Essie Blanc and art liners in white and gold glitter.

I love how they turned out, what do you think?

AND THE BEST PART; This nail polish collection will be sold exclusively at www.CesarsShop.fi starting tomorrow at 18:00! So if you're drooling over mine (or somebody else's) polish, be sure to check it out! The price is 14,80€ for a bottle and they're 15ml each.

Sadly, we can only ship inside Finland due to the finnish customs that suck and don't allow shipping nail polish outside our country. Sorry about that.

Hi lovelies! Here's a few outfits snaps from last friday and I'm kinda sad there was only three pics I was happy with... It started raining right after we went outside to take some pics, so my hair got frizzy and flat and overally it just wasn't a great weather to be outdoors at all.

So, after taking the few pics shown above, we headed to my neighbourhood liquor store to buy some sparkling wine to lift up our spirits and headed back to my place. Later in the evening we ended up going clubbing to Club Vatican, which turned out to be a really nice place (I wanna go again!!), but if I would've known there would be a masquarade theme party happening there, I would've worn something completely different lol.

Anyway, what I ended up wearing was my favorite harness shorts, new FTW mesh jersey and new platforms by UNIF. This shirt is also available as a regular tee, but who would pick that when you can have the mesh one!

I'm also in love with these new shoes I bought and I must say that they're the comfiest platforms I've worn so far! But they're also quite narrow, so if you have wide feet and are thinking about buying these, think again. They came with black laces so you can change the look of them if you want to, which I think is a great plus.

Oh yeah, and here's my current set of nails! I wanted to try some of my new glitter polishes (the pink/white one: Color Club - My Generation) and this is what I came up with!

I also got the idea to try out the splatter technique after reading an article about it in the newest Nail It! -issue

I first tried using a toothbrush for the effect but that didn't work at all for me so I used the straw technique instead. I noticed that it works the best if you use a thin straw (well, a normal one I guess. I have big ones and normal ones so I consider the normal one as a small one lol).
For the best result, try quickly blowing into the straw and don't hold it too close to your nail. 5-10cm distance should work the best.

It was my first time trying out this technique, but I think result was pretty good anyway! What do you think? Would you try this yourself?
